Introduction
The acquisition or upgrade of a sophisticated finance and treasury system for any treasury operation is always a major exercise and involves significant effort and associated cost. The number of systems available internationally, while relatively small, does provide treasuries with significant scope to find solutions to best meet their requirements. A well-designed strategy, using proven methodology, should be established to select and implement any treasury system, ensuring that the organisation can meet user requirements within the budgets established and the timetable needed to meet the decision-support requirements of the treasury operation. It will also ensure that the project is scoped correctly, control over the project is maintained throughout and expectations of individuals and the organisation are managed.
Good project management is needed to manage users' expectations, use business process reviews to leverage off the system and ensure maximum benefit, and involve staff as much as possible throughout the implementation. User buy in is the key to the success of any treasury systems project.
